LTS Interviews – Broadway Calls
Interviewer: Jack Shaw

Cramped in a tiny room just to the side of the arena, full with The Offspring equipment, sit Broadway Calls, a three-piece pop-punk band with stacks of energy and a brand new album.
LiveTheScene caught up with them as they embark on a stint of UK and European shows in promotion of ‘Good Views, Bad News’.
LTS: You played Brixton last night, how was that show?
Ty (Vocals / Guitar): It was awesome! It was probably the biggest London show we’ve played besides Give It A Name and it was really fun. It was weird to play in front of a crowd like that. It was awesome!
How has it been opening for a band like The Offspring?
Ty: It’s been cool. Last night was the first night so, so far so good.
You’ve got a few more shows supporting haven’t you?
Ty: Yeah we’ve got one in Italy and one in Germany.
You’ve got the Reading and Leeds Festivals this weekend, looking forward to it?
Ty: Definitely. We really wanted on it and it happened so it’s going to be like insane to see that many people. I’ve never even seen that many people let alone played a show.
You’ve played festivals before, how is it different from playing your own shows?
Josh (Drums): Erm… there’s a barricade (laughs) for one. You’re a minimum of fifteen feet away from anyone.
Matt (Vocals, Bass): Reading and Leeds is probably more than that (laughs)
Josh: We’re not playing on the floor.
Will you be sticking around to catch any of the bands?
Josh: Frank Turner and really want to see Brand New.
Matt: Radiohead… yeah definitely.
Ty: We’re going up Friday early to see some of our friends too like Polar Bear Club.
Your album (Good Views, Bad News) came out last week, how has the fan reaction been?
Josh: I don’t know if we’ve had a reaction
Matt: You know I saw probably two people singing along last night to the new stuff so that was cool.
Have you got any plans to tour the UK in support of the album as a headline act?
Matt: Maybe more support in December but I don’t know if we’re ready for headline yet (laughs) They don’t like to hear that.
So how’s the album different to your previous?
Josh: I think it’s more energetic, more straight forward, just like straight to the point.
Ty: Yeah it’s more focussed. Like we tried to cut the fat on our songs and Bill Stevenson (NOFX, Rise Against) really helped us do that.
What can people expect from a Broadway Calls live performance?Matt: Some spit.
Ty: Not a lot of talking. We just play our songs back to back.
Josh: Yeah more spit than talking (laughs)
When you hit the scene in 2005 you obviously had the likes of Blink-182 and Bowling For Soup dominating the genre you perhaps fit into, was it difficult for people to take you seriously?
Josh: Not really, we weren’t playing to those kind of kids or even listen to Bowling For Soup. We played to a whole different audience who accepted us for what we were doing.
Just recently, last year, we started playing to kids that might actually be into that.
What can fans expect from Broadway Calls in the future?
Ty: Just a lot more touring now because the record just came out so we’re going to be on the road.
What do you do to relax while you’re on tour?
Josh: We don’t really relax.
Ty: Yeah it depends what town you’re in.
Matt: A good relaxing day off on a tour would be for us if we’re in a city or we have a friend who has a sweet place for us to go hang out at. Swimming, we like to go swimming.
Josh: Eat burritos.
Ty: A burrito and a pool would be a good day off.
Josh: So there’s no relaxing in the UK for us because there’s no burritos.
So what are you planning on doing after you’ve finished touring with The Offspring?
Matt: We’ll be back here probably touring in December after that we have two East Coast tours with Streetlight Manifesto and The Gaslight Anthem.
Then we do Bouncing Souls touring with Bayside. And then back here in November and December.
